Building Inclusive Societies

When I was 13 years old, my friends interrogated me before I could have lunch with them because of what they had read or seen in the media about people who looked like me. Research shows that Islamophobia is worse today than it was that day after 9/11, over twenty years ago. As a kidlit writer, educational media producer, and international development practitioner, I work with youth and the industries that serve them to increase understanding of underrepresented stories and promote inclusive narrative design. Below are some of the learning sessions and consulting services I offer. Each offering is customized based on the educational needs of the audience and can be delivered virtually or in-person based on location.

Testimonials

Andrea

Narmeen delivered an insightful, personal, and accessible talk. Through her research and anecdotal stories, she is able to challenge assumptions about what representation can look like in practice, and how media makers can create with inclusivity inherently embedded in creative processes.

Gita

Narmeen offered excellent insight into the power of storytelling while engaging us through her personal stories and research. She allowed us to think more critically about how to bridge cultural divides, reflect on who decides what stories get told, and ways of authentically telling stories about Muslim people and cultures.

Tim

I really enjoyed Narmeen’s talk. Months later, I’m still thinking about the differences she brought up between visual representation and narrative representation. I loved how she keeps the bar high and is always pushing for more, bringing with her the importance of curiosity over shame.
